Burning Injustice – voted ‘Best Short Documentary’ at The San Francisco Green Film Festival – was produced in conjunction with The Story of Stuff Project. The 18-minute documentary chronicles the tireless efforts of VIP campaigners in their fight to protect their community against the harmful impacts of Covanta’s Incinerator in Crows Landing, Stanislaus County. The film sheds light on the severe health consequences of the incinerator and the group’s ongoing battle for environmental justice in the northern San Joaquin Valley.
In 2023, in collaboration with Zero Waste USA and community members, VIP formulated a comprehensive Zero Waste Plan. Following the film screening, VIP will introduce the plan, highlighting 21 potential initiatives for implementation, estimating potential diversion and emission reductions, alongside cost estimates. Currently under community, city, and county review, the plan underscores our commitment to a sustainable future, free from incineration.
Lastly, the event will also include a panel discussion on achieving a fair and sustainable transition with the Zero Waste Plan, delving into the critique of misleading solutions in waste management and addressing false solutions. Our panelist will include our partners at Zero Waste USA, Just Transition Alliance, and the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives.

Stanislaus Burns Recyclable and Compostable material-
but not for long…
Stanislaus County has 1 of 2 waste incinerators in the state and has the capacity to burn 800 tons of waste every day. Incinerators spew massive and extremely harmful pollutants like ammonia and lead into the air, pollute our water and puts toxic ash into the landfill near overburdened communities and undermine state goals for waste diversion.
VIP advocates for a zero-waste future and a just transition away from dirty solutions, like incineration.
In 2021 VIP collaborated with East Yards Communities for Environmental Justice and Earth Justice on a detailed report on the last two incinerators in CA. In 2022 we co-sponsored a CA bill, AB 1857, that passed and is now implemented as of January 1, 2023.
